In 2024, Mental Health Reform (MHR) intensified its mission to advocate for a robust, rights-based mental health system in Ireland. Through strategic campaigns, policy engagement, and collaborative events, we amplified the voices of our member organisations and pushed for systemic change.

We started the year with high-impact advocacy on the Mental Health Bill, engaging with national media to amplify concerns and push for rights-based reform.

February

Mental Health Reform presented before the UN Committee monitoring the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights—ensuring Ireland’s mental health system is held to international human rights standards.

We also hosted the Leaders in Lived Experience Conference, championing the voices of those at the heart of the mental health system.

March

Mental Health Reform met with Minister of State for Mental Health, Mary Butler TD, in Government Buildings to advance urgent policy priorities and advocate for system-wide accountability.

April

We launched groundbreaking research on Mental Health Services and Supports in Prisons, shining a light on the unmet needs of one of Ireland’s most vulnerable populations.

Our Innovation Showcase brought together trailblazing projects and ideas transforming mental health care across sectors.

June

We joined cross-border partners in Derry for the PeacePlus initiative, building momentum for mental health as a peacebuilding and inclusion priority.

July

We held our Annual General Meeting in person, reconnecting with our network and reflecting on shared achievements.

We also launched our Pre-Budget Submission, demanding bold investment in mental health in Budget 2025.

 

August

Our Pre-Budget Submission campaign gained traction alongside our Mental Health Amendment Act advocacy, keeping pressure on policymakers to deliver.

September

We welcomed Philip Watt as our Interim CEO, ensuring strong leadership during a critical period of transition.

We hosted a webinar for people with lived experience on the evolving Mental Health Act.

Held Coalition Conversations on Social Inclusion in mental health, and launched our new resource: Mental Health in the Workplace: A Guide to Your Right

Held an Oireachtas Meet & Greet and launched a language briefing to influence how policymakers talk about mental health.

October

Our second Coalition Conversations focused on suicide prevention and reduction—bringing lived experience and expert voices together.

Delivered a Mental Health Act webinar for professionals, supporting understanding of upcoming legislative changes.

November

In Galway, we hosted a Regional Members’ Showcase, held election hustings, and led a seminar on the Mental Health Act—ensuring the West was heard and included.

We also launched our General Election 2024 campaign, working to secure mental health as a key issue on the national political agenda.
