Suicide Reporting
Read More
Suicide reporting is a critical area for Ireland’s next iteration of Connecting for Life. Timely, accurate data helps us understand trends, direct resources, and prevent further loss of life. Currently, delays in reporting and the high burden of proof create significant gaps in knowledge and response. Moving towards real-time, lower-burden reporting can ensure that services are more responsive, communities are better supported, and prevention strategies are rooted in evidence.
Róisín Farrelly, Mental Health Reform Research and Programmes Officer, is joined by expert speakers in the field to discuss how data can play a key role in not just reporting, but prevention.
About the Speakers
Róisín Farrelly joined Mental Health Reform in March 2025 as Research and Programmes Officer. She has previously been involved in research projects about psychosis intervention, gender roles in parenting, and neural stimulation. She holds an Msc in Clinical Health Psychology from Queen’s University Belfast. Her master’s dissertation explored the application of a brain-computer interface with wireless EEG for stroke recovery. Róisín has also volunteered in social groups for people with intellectual disability.
Fiona Tuomey is the CEO and founder of HUGG, Ireland’s national suicide bereavement organisation. After losing her 11-year-old daughter, Milly, to suicide in 2016, an experience that revealed a critical gap in postvention services and support for those grieving suicide loss, she established HUGG to ensure no one faces suicide loss alone. Through her leadership, advocacy, and lived experience, she has become a leading voice in suicide postvention, shaping national awareness and providing insight to the importance of suicide postvention as part of suicide prevention strategies.
Dr Paul Corcoran is the Head of Research with the National Suicide Research Foundation, an organisation which is conducts vital exploration of suicidal behaviour and suicide rates in Ireland. Paul has published a large number of peer-reviewed articles in the area focusing on topics such as self-harm, suicidal crisis and prevention, and the social determinants of suicide.
